Stupid Things: Part One of Many

Dec 28, 2007 14:58

I'm thinking of having an occasional segment just called Stupid Things. Here's the recent edition:

My quest to avoid my family has brought me here, to the most shameful place in Mountain View. The Starbucks. At the table next to me are two very hip teenage guys apparently studying to become Starbucks baristas. Yes, studying. A process which involves no less than the following accouterments: two notebooks, a large binder, illustrated flashcards, and four cubes that have words such as "whip", "latte", and "non-fat". The cubes serve as a study aid when one shuffles them randomly, then stares at them intently and takes notes.

One of the guys is listening to an iPod, perhaps a Starbucks barista test-preparation podcast? They keep quizzing each other and scribbling in the notebooks. Despite all this learning, the barista who actually made my drink got it wrong.

This particular Starbucks is selling a DVD of Nirvana's Unplugged in New York. No comment.

A got a tube of toothpaste today. The first sentence under Directions: "unscrew the cap". Still no comment.

stupid things, stories
