The Last Of The New 52

Oct 03, 2011 12:54

This and last week I got far fewer comics than on the other weeks - just three a piece - so here's the combined review of those final New 52 titles I picked up, in no particular order.
  • Blue Beetle: A flat-out reboot for this newish character and perhaps one of the best books to buy soemone who doesn't know much about comics and you want to give them something fun.  I remain skeptical that he'll last long, considering his track record in print, but I've become fond of Jamie and it's nice to see him back.   I'm willing to give this a few issues.
  • DC Universe Presents: A very old-fashioned sort of comic book, with no fixed cast but instead a different spotlight every so often - the sort of showcase title that The Brave & The Bold tried to bring back.  This is actually qutie good, taking a C-Lister like Deadman and giving him some life.  (Yes, yes, I know.)  Perhaps my opinion will change when it becomes someone I don't care about but for now this is a book I'll keep picking up.
  • Wonder Woman: This is a slightly oblique story, but not because it's canon heavy - it's just a first part which keeps a lot of cards to it's chest.  Staying in the realm of Greek gods, this might be a good way to get people mroe into Sandman-esque stuff into a superhero comic book.  Not a huge amount happens is perhaps the biggest probem - and Diana gets very little intro.  I'm definitely giving this a go a bit longer.
  • I, Vampire: The only New 52 comic I bought without reserving, Forbidden Planet chum John reccomended this.  It's definitely pretty, and it's nice to again see more comcis in this new set doing something different to the superheroics - a story about a Vampire war and the two sides involved - but I can't imagine me picking upt he second issue.  It just felt a bit clunky to me, a nice premise with lacing execution.
  • Justice League Dark: I want to love this, but I find myself decidedly meh over this "team-up of mystic superheroes" affair.  Constantine, Xanadu, Deadman, Shade and my beloved Zatanna should be cool, but not only does nothing much happen what does happen invovles the new League rather than the stars of this book.  Zatanna is often drawn sexy, but the outfit here feels a bit too overtly sexual for my tastes.  This is getting a bit longer to get going but not chuffed so far.
  • All-Star Western: Maybe the best comic read in the past two weeks, All-Star Western #1 pairs of Jonah Hex the cowboy bounty-hunter with an Arkham-named psychologist to fnid a crinimal in 1880s Gotham.  I'm a big fan of cowboy films where the cowboy seems out of place - The Outlaw Josey Wales or Unforgiven, for example - so the tone is right up my alley.  The sepia-tinged art (with a splash of colour for those sexy hookers or the horrible corpses) defintely adds to the tone.  This is definitely going on my regular list.
