Chad was sick of the hiding, the lying and the pretending. It was New Year’s Eve and he wanted to celebrate with the person he loved most in this world. He didn’t want to watch him celebrate with her. He didn’t want to watch them kiss at midnight. He wanted to be the one doing the kissing when the clock chimed to ring in the new year. He made up his mind to do just that. There was only one minute to go now. Ryan came over to him expecting that they would kiss at midnight, but not this year.
This year he didn’t want a chaste friendly kiss from his current best friend. He wanted a long passionate kiss from his former best friend and lover. He wanted to celebrate the new year the way they used to celebrate it, wrapped in each other’s arms, not a care in the world. With only seconds remaining before the new year, Chad made his way over to the seemingly happy couple. The countdown began and their eyes met. Troy’s were full of questions and Chad’s held the answer. “Happy New Year,” everyone said. Chad took a chance and made his move.
In front of everyone at the party. In front of Gabriella and Taylor. In front of Sharpay and Zeke. In front of Jason and Martha. In front of the Boltons and the Evanses. In front of the whole world. In front of anyone who cared to see. He pulled Troy Bolton into his arms and kissed him hard and slow. Troy stood rigid and unmoving. He was obviously in shock. This was not what they did. They didn’t display their love and passion. It was always behind closed doors, where no one could see. Chad let go and walked away.
He didn’t make it very far though. Troy grabbed his arm and spun him around. This time he pulled Chad into a kiss. It was nothing like the one before. It was sweet and sensual. Troy slipped his tongue into Chad’s mouth and Chad let a soft moan escape his lips. Chad wrapped his arms around Troy’s waist. Troy grabbed a handful of Chad’s curls. They finally parted, both of them flustered and breathless.
“Happy New Year,” Chad said.
“I love you,” Troy answered, “and I want everyone to know.”
“What changed?” Chad questioned.
“It’s a new year, so everything.”
