Title: Cleaning

The house smelled of oranges.
Curious, Troy closed the front door and headed for the kitchen expecting to find her eating an orange. Instead, he found her on her knees, her jean covered butt in the air scrubbing the kitchen floor.
“Shar, what are you doing?”
“I’m cleaning the floor.” Her blonde ponytail whipped around as she looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because it was dirty.”
“We have a maid.”
“I know, but I just like cleaning. Besides, the cleaner smells like oranges and I love oranges. They smell so fresh and orangey.”
Troy shook his head and left the room.

She shivered. It was too cold to be outside. No sane person would be out there on a night like this. Snow was falling in big, heavy flakes, cover everything in white.
Yet he was out there, dressed in a pair of black ski pants and a bright red jacket, building a snowman. She had told him to wait for the morning but he had to do it now, he said.
She watched as he shoved a bright orange carrot into the head of his snowman. Finished! He took a step back, clapped his hands than ran towards the house.

A grin crossed Chad’s face as he spotted Taylor in the stands. She looked so pretty, dressed from head to toe in the school colors. He waved at her and she waved back. He blew her a kiss, making her blush. But she sent one back.
A whistle blew and the crowd cheered.
“Come on, Chad,” Troy said. “Get your head in the game!”
Chad nodded. He stole the ball from the other team and threw it over to Troy.
He looked into the stands and smiled at Taylor.
He didn’t see the blur of orange flying at his head.

“CHAD!”
“Is he okay?”
“Chad?”
“Is he alive?”
“Chad, can you hear me?”
“Give him room.”
Chad opened his eyes and saw a billion heads standing above him.
“He’s awake!”
“Chad, does anything hurt?”
“Just my head.” He rubbed the bump that was forming on his forehead.
“I think he’s okay. Let’s get him off the court.”
Coach and Troy helped him to his feet and the gym erupted in applause as he made his way to the sideline. They lowered him into a chair and the team doctor checked his vitals.
“He’ll be ok. He just needs some ice.”

A whistle blew and his teammates ran back on to the court.
The team doctor handed him an orange basketball shaped ice pack, instructing him to hold it against the bump.
Chad sighed as he watched his friends playing ball, feeling the vibrations of the bouncing ball and thundering feet going up and down the court. He wanted to be out there, too. One look at the team doctor told him it wasn’t going to happen.
Then she was there and he felt better. She took the orange ice pack from him then held it against his head for him.
