lilacstar and the Beast went on a girl-scout overnight today. Instead of camping, they're spending today and half of tomorrow at a hotel.
It digs into Father's Day a bit, but I don't think the troop leader is eager to get back home. She and her husband live with her in-laws.
I've been trying to go shooting with a coworker of mine for months. Every Saturday, on or both of us has some prevailing activity. This was the first open weekend, and the next several don't look good afterwards. Since the girls had to leave before noon, I couldn't go by myself. He suggested I bring the boys.
lilacstar agreed to it, so long as I don't let the boys know I actually own guns. Two nights ago, I went over gun safety with an empty .22 rifle. We covered the 4 rules, how to check for a round in the chamber, how to eject the mag, the safety, and how to hold the rifle. I included the Beast as well, because she needs to know this stuff.
This morning, we got up a quarter to 6 and headed out to my buddy's house. The range wasn't crowded and we got a spot right away. Everyone was really nice and attentive. I let the boys shoot my .22 Remington 597. I gave them each one round, and let them shoot. They were thrilled. For me, it was a bit exhausting. I watched them carefully, making sure they kept safe. It made it more difficult for me to shoot much.
By the end of the morning, the boys had shot a full mag through the .22, a round through my Glock 17, a round through my .30-30 lever-action, and a few rounds through my buddy's Beretta Cx4 9mm carbine. Just before we left, the Mouse saw a guy nearby shooting a single-action revolver, a cowboy gun. I told him the boys were fascinated and he offered to let them shoot next hot-range period. They each got a turn shooting an entire cylinder of .22lr through the revolver. The guy was really nice.
This afternoon, we went shopping for HeroScape figures and gun cleaners. We bought some D&D miniatures, and a 4qt dutch oven, along with the cleaning supplies.
When we got home, the boys demanded we play a D&D game together. I got the miniatures out and ran them through an official starter module, ages 6+. They had a blast.
In one day, I've introduced the boys to shooting and PnP RPGs. Talk about some dad-son time. I do wish the Beast had been here, because I meant to do all this with her at the same time.
In other good news, she aced her Standford-10 test. 30/30 in Reading, Math and Language Arts. The Mouse was very good, 25, 28, and 30 respectively.
