... this Comm is up and running!!!

Hey :)

I hope everyone has had a lovely weekend. Personally, while my weekend was relaxing, I feel like I've failed... Meaning the work I needed to get done, mostly for school (readings and fun stuff lke that) didn't get done. However I have been working on this Comm; which, clearly fandom is more important anyway, ( Read more... )

So if you could help me with a list for common careers, that would be more than lovely :)

rentboy?
also, i wonder whether, if we end up having an "unusual careers" post, it might just start out with a ref to hd_career_fair, since almost all of these were of rec quality.

lastly, it sounds like you're pretty busy, jaime27. have you considered asking for someone to co-mod so that all the work doesn't fall to you?

actually, looking at later comments, i wonder whether "unusual careers" isn't necessarily dependent on the character mentioned. like, "fry cook" is definitely an unusual occupation for severus snape, but probably less so for dudley dursley. similarly, we expect neville to be an herbologist, but not ron. (in fact, i can't think of any story in which ron is an herbologist, but then again, ron's usually a side character in the stories i favour.) quidditch player wouldn't seem like an unusual career for ginny, draco, oliver, viktor, harry, alicia or ron, but it would be unusual for hermione, any other weasley (because they already have other careers), dean, luna, mclaggen, or even cho. would we expect goyle to be a professor? probably not, but we'd likely not be surprised to see most of the other students in harry's year in that position.

so, to end, i would recommend hd_career_fair for unusual harry and draco careers, but if we/you put out a call for unusual!careers recs, the unusual career would probably need to be defined by the person making the ( ... )

I agree. I think the "unusual" part depends on who exactly is in that career.

Like if "potions master" is the career, the two names that come up more often are Snape and Draco. But what about Neville? Or even Ginny? So I think it should be defined as unusual for the character in general.

(I <3 the career fair, by the way! Working my way through the last fest right now.)

I really don't think Aurors, Healers, and Professors are unusual careers unless it is someone who didn't do that in canon. Still doesn't feel that unusual though.
So there is also:
Curse breaker - is there a call for this other than by Gringotts
Shopkeeper/Barkeeper
Clothing designer
Professional photographer
Singer/musician
Chef
Artist and or Portrait painter
Solicitor or Barrister
what other things could a Potions Master do
Research
Apothecary
Caterer
Dancer / Dancing instructor
Model?
Hair Dresser / Make-up artist

At hd_career_fair the usual careers for Harry and Draco were defined as follows:

Harry: Auror, Professor, Healer, Quidditch Player
Draco: Auror, Professor, Healer, Potions Master

At Career Fair there is a post with an occupational round-up with links to all fic and art created for Career Fair, sorted by careers. :D

I second what vaysh11 said. My first thought for what was missing was 'Quidditch player'.

Not to mention designing racing brooms .......

A fic I once read, I believe it was Drop Dead Gorgeous by Maya, said that Arthur patented flying charms for cars and Ron made a business selling them and also a flying limo service and became the richest wizard in Britain!

About the unusual careers thing: Aurors, Healers and Professors are fairly common! When I read "unusual career", I think of things like : Draco working in Divination, Harry being a culinary critics, Harry being a nurse (muggle-style!), and so on...
