Professor Slughorn looked around the Great Hall. It was a rare thing, to see it this empty, but that would be changing soon enough. Tomorrow, the Hogwarts Express would arrive, bringing the students back to the seat of learning.

He had a feeling... This year was going to be ( Read more... )

Bill hurried in, tucking his wand away into his sleeve pocket. He wiped the sweat off his forehead, and took a couple of deep breaths.

"Sorry about the late arrival," he said, pulling out a chair, "am I the last of the stragglers? I was testing a new locking charm in my office and forget I actually had to get out of the bloody place. Is there Firewhisky? I make a point of following stressful magical crises with strong liquor, better than chocolate if you ask me. Harry! What have you been up to?"

"Hmm, I wonder if I ought to pass that advice on to my students..." Aurelius tapped his chin thoughtfully, his face inscrutable as he poured himself a small cup of thick turkish coffee from an elaborate pot.

Bill chuckled. "Well, Harry's the Defense Against the Dark Arts man, I suppose the medicinal qualities of liquor are his purview. Although, from the sounds some of the Gryffindor common room parties, I suspect some of our more enterprising students have already made that particular discovery." He grinned. "Kids, eh?"

"Really?" Aurelius sipped his coffee, and turned his gaze to Neville. "Quite the handful are they, Longbottom?"

"Some of them, yes. You wouldn't believe how many times I had to get out of bed the last time Gryffindor won the Quidditch Cup. They can get rather excitable."

Neville shook his head and poured himself a glass of the wine.

Harry stood up to shake his brother-in-law's hand

'Mainly trying to stop James torment his younger syblings... The older he gets the more like his uncles he becomes...'

Harry turned to the Gryffindor head. 'Neville, as much as I hate to say it, you are really going to have to keep an eye on him this year.'

'So, how are your two, Bill? I heard about Victoire being made Headgirl. Congratulations.'

"Don't forget his Grandfather, Harry. James and Sirius set the standard which the Weasley twins lived up to. It took your mother's influence to get him to tone his antics down... Nobody wanted to get on the wrong side of Lily Evans, bless her heart."

"Runs in the family, doesn't it?" Bill couldn't keep the pride out of his voice. "They're quite well. It's been a funny summer; Ariana's all abuzz about finally enrolling at Hogwarts, while Victoire's talking about what she'll do when she leaves. Albus is starting this year, isn't he? What is it you start the first-years on?"

[OOC: I know this comes dangerously close to god-modding Victoire and Ariana, but I was asked a direct question about them and I'm supposed to know...]

Aurelius chuckled. "So, that makes it... three of your lot in the first year alone, eh?" He began to meticulously peel a lemon with a sharp knife. "I think that you could found your own house quite happily."
Popping a segment of lemon into his mouth, Aurelius turned to Slughorn. "Never tempted to start a family of your own, Horace?"

The headmaster chuckled "Me? A father? I hardly think so. Never say never, of course, but still..." his voice trailed off a little, before he caught himself.

"Besides, my friends and associates are like a family to me. For what is a family, but those one is closest to? Those whom one supports, and are, in turn, supported by? No, Aurelius. In my experience, family is where you find it; genetics are not the be-all and end-all of the matter"

"Indeed. And besides, having worked here as long as you have I could understand a reluctance to have children of your own." Aurelius smiled wryly. "I see you as more of an uncle than a father, anyway." He wiped the lemon juice from his fingers with a napkin.
