She wasn't impressed. Most of the books had such boring titles as 'Potions: A Primer', "Broomsticks for Beginners" and "Simple Cantrips". There was no way she was spending her money on such dull books. Instead, she turned her back on the neat rows of identical textbooks on the "First Year" shelf and turned to the "Second Hand Books" section. Rows of dusty, badly stacked tomes lined the oak shelves. All different colours and sizes, some leatherbound, some with yellowing pages, their titles varied from "Prehistoric Dragons" to "How To Annoy The Ministry of Magic". She was mostly interested in the pictures: the one about dragons had some very imaginative colour prints of the author's impressions of how the ancient beasts might have looked, as well as photographs of the fossils. She flipped through the pages.
"Are you going to Hogwarts, little girl?" asked the shopkeeper, a very old wizard with a white beard and horn-rimmed spectacles. Sybil peered up at him, blinking. He pointed to the list in her hands.
"You should really buy the books on the reading list." he advised, "You'll be working from them a lot. When I was a boy, I didn't have one of the books because I couldn't afford them all. I didn't get very high marks in that class."
"But they're boring." she said.
"I'll tell you what, little girl." he said, "I'll give you a book for free if you buy the books on the list. is it a deal?"
She considered this for a moment.
"Any book at all?" she asked.
"Well, not from the top shelf. That's not for children."
"Can I have this book?" she asked, holding up the book in her hands. He nodded.
