To say that the Aurors were abuzz these last few days would have been a major understatement. To say that they were happy about the events would have been a gross deception. So'd have been to say that peace time had blunted their skills.
That didn't mean they were infallible, Dave thought as he got the owl that the healers had finally allowed an Auror, ONE, to visit a victim, a wounded, frightened little boy - to ask him questions.
Matthew Heim, aged nine. Born during the short but vicious third-Voldemort-war. Curious, open to the world, adventurous, inventive, inquisitive. Recently, lycanthropic. Badly scared; bitten in two places. Loving big dogs and his grandfather.
Dave throught of his own granddaughter, tiny little girl, barely more than a toddler. Too early to tell if she had any magical talent at all, but that wasn't the most important about her. She was... someone to be cherished. Loved. Protected. Somebody, the attack of whom would demand... Justice.
And even though justice was rumoured to be blind, she still had to hear the facts. And there was one person only to tell the facts as he saw them.
Matthew. Victim, witness. Extremely important. But still a child.
Dave had no idea what to expect precisely. Children described that way could react so many ways to stress. But he knew he was definitely going to work NOT to put him under additional stress.
He walked into Matthew's room without aplomb, but carrying two paper bags: one with Every-Flavour Beans, and one with more common chocolate buttons, the kind they sell in muggle stores but are still delicious. He smiled a little at the boy, who looked almost lost in the big hospital bed, and moved closer, carefully.
"Good morning, Matthew. My name is Dave, Dave Sanders, and I'm an Auror. I was assigned to come and ask you a few questions, if that is all right with you. I will also answer you if you have questions of me, and," he took out his plain muggle pocket watch. "I have been only given a limited time to bother you. If you want, you may follow the time yourself, and tell me when I should get lost. How does that sound to you?"
