Heim claims victory as Houis steps down

Following a shocking revelation that she did not remember her whereabouts the night Secretary Heim was attacked, Ellen Houis, Healer in Charge of Dai Llewellyn Ward for Serious Bites stepped down today and was put on an leave of absence following an investigation. She was seen leaving St. Mungo’s in the company of Lucius Malfoy. Ellen Houis had been one of the leading werewolf activists but finally stepped down under mounting pressure. Ms. Houis was infected at age 23. Her attacker Tom Collins, a former Death Eater turned werewolf, is still at large.

“This victory is only a small step in our journey to make a safer England.” Secretary Heim was quoted as saying in an impromptu speech at St. Mungo’s. Mr. Heim was head of St. Mungo’s hospital until his retirement eleven years ago. He has been quoted in saying that while he believes his work should begin at St. Mungo’s he will not rest until he is certain that England as a whole is safe and secure for every man’s son and daughter. “We have failed them long enough by allowing such dangerous elements free reign of our society. It is time we took England back.”

McNair smiled thinly as he finished reading the paper, and threw his gaze upward to where Heim stood looking out his window, glass in hand. That was one that was more loyal then a Hufflepuff, Heim and his Scotch. Across the room, sitting languidly in the high back leather chair was a woman with raven hair and eyes that reminded you very much of a cat who caught the canary. Her own hand curled delicately around her drink that remained untouched. McNair had noticed early on, this woman never drank in mixed company. She was by far too busy watching.

“You’ve done well for yourself, Heim.” McNair began easily. “Quicker then I thought you would. I hear Houis is contemplating a move.” He grinned. “Apparently, the protesters are making threats.”

“Are they yours?” Heim took another long sip of his drink.

“I wouldn’t get caught up on details, Heim. Sufficed to say, the public continues to be frightened.”

“I won’t have a mob that could be tied back to me.”

“I wouldn’t be concerned.” He returned easily enough. “My people know how to remain discreet, even without cloaks and masks.”

Heim glanced over, as if he was considering something but instead took another drink. “Cleaning out St. Mungo’s was no small thing and it was only the beginning.”

“True. We’ll do great things together.”

“I wouldn’t celebrate too loudly, boys.” The woman was laughing, from behind her glass in the very caricature of a drinker. “There’s still Hogwarts.”

“You said I would have the Governors backing by now.” Heim said, turning his attention back to McNair. He waved an accusing finger at him. “I want that wolf and his guardian out of the school.”

“Certain members have become far more…troublesome then originally thought.”

“Are you saying you can’t do it?”

“I’m saying it will take time.”

“Time.” The woman interjected, flashing those dark eyes to each man and setting her drink down. “Is something you both have in very limited quality. I’ll be brief. My husband is in a precarious situation. He is unwilling to come out on either side of this delicate and volatile situation. He is not a fool and need I remind you…all of your grand little plans, Matthias, will crumble without his support.”

Heim was staring at his honeyed drink. “We’ll see.”

The woman remained silent for only a moment. “Be assured our position has not changed since last we spoke, Matthias. But we must be careful. Potter, Malfoy and the rest have more or less a united front against any move you or your friends would make. You will need something very powerful if you want England- by proxy, my husband, on your side.”

There was a smile that graced her lips for a moment and only that before she picked up her shawl to leave. “I wish you well, Mr. Heim. I truly do.”

McNair watched her go with a smile, “There goes the spirit of the age in Jimmy Choos.”

“Do you think you can do it?”

“Remove a Headmaster and Deputy in the middle of the tournament?” McNair considered. “It’s doable, but we’d need another attack like the one we had on the Auror. Pity he survived…have we even tried to figure out who is behind this?”

“It has to be Remus.” Heim said dismissively. “You keep working on the Governors board- and Houis…”

“Done.”

“And I’ll take care of Hogwarts.” There was something in Heim’s voice that made McNair look up once more. Matthias’ attention was entirely on the glass in his hand, as if he could see something in the liquor that was nowhere else. He was swaying slightly as he stood. McNair nodded simply. “For our children and our grandchildren.”

Heim didn’t seem to notice the toast at all as he finished the last of his drink.
