scarf question

and now i'm wondering if i should frog it and start over. i followed the atypically pattern as far as number of cast-on stitches, but i used the needle recommendation on the yarn i chose (10) ... and my scarf is ending up 16 inches wide. this is maybe too wide for me, especially for a scarf of this length.
so do you guys think i should start over? if i do, how many stitches would you recommend casting on to get closer to a 9 or 10 inch width? or should i just get a new set of circs in a 7 or 8 or something like that? i'm extremely new to knitting, so thanks for your help ^_^
