Victoire failed to stifle a scream. She fell hard, scrambling backward, away from the rearing beast. Sharp hooves but a sharper horn, a single, macabre drop of blood trailing down its horsey nose.
A Boggart, she knew, but knowledge didn’t stop the shaking, the cold sweat of terror, the faint-headed near-swoon, or the fear-filled tears.
And the children were laughing. Her no-good banshees of cousins, always assigned to her despite different Houses, amused by her complete humiliation and removal of dignity.
James was laughing especially hard. He arranged the Boggart’s appearance in the traditional Hogwarts’ Halloween haunted house, she realized with a horrified jolt. “You’re… afraid of unicorns?” he gasped. “I thought you were afraid of being ugly!”
Her long ago lie to hide her fear after a sighting in the Forbidden Forest during foaling season-mother unicorns were brutally protective, she’d seen. “But this is so much better!” the boy crowed.
“I hate you, James Sirius!” Victoire cried fervently. “I hate you, you ‘orrid little boy!” She rose and ran, heedless of Halloween enchantments. The seventeen-year-old part-Veela felt embarrassed, broken, betrayed beyond words by her cousins’ act.
She hated tradition. Even worse, right now she really hated her family.
