It was a parlor game for young women, not almost-forty year old werewolves, but Remus was alone and lonely, and it was midnight on Halloween, Severus' favorite night of the year.
Dousing all but one candle, Remus stood in front of the mirror. "Show me," he whispered. "Show my true love."
A long, agonizing moment of dread hope passed, and the mirror remained empty save for Remus' own reflection; he tried not to be disappointed. It was only a game, and he had never been good at Divination anyway.
Then - a shimmer of movement behind him. Severus' face appeared over his shoulder. He whirled, wide-eyed, expecting to see nothing, but instead, he saw Severus - all of him - standing in the bedroom doorway.
"Are you real?" he whispered.
Warm, thin fingers closed around his outstretched hand, tugging him closer, and he fell into Severus' embrace with a strangled sob.
"How?" He clung to Severus, breathing in Severus' familiar, beloved scent, scarcely able to believe he wasn't dreaming or mad.
"Idiot." Severus' deep voice was full of fond affection. "Did you think I would not have a plan?"
"I should have known you wouldn’t leave me."
"Yes, you should."
