The sun had set the sky ablaze in muted oranges and purples, bleeding into black. Long shadows grew around corners and under ledges as the world became grey.
A small, rural town creaked when a stiff, chill wind blew around its cottages, rustling their thatched roofs and wooden shingles, stirring up dead leaves to rush down the shadowy streets. As the gust settled down, a dark figure cracked into being behind the houses.
He remained unseen through the town, not hiding his existence but not drawing attention either. He side-stepped groups of small children already trick-or-treating; he had not come for the living.
Upon reaching the cemetery, he warded the gate so as not to be disturbed. He moved among the stones, searching, knowing she was here, ignoring the crunch under his feet.
He finally found her, the sight of the white headstone, her name engraved upon it, bringing fresh grief that clinched his heart and stole his breath. He sank to his knees, numb.
It was hours before he moved, midnight when he took out a candle and lit it. Setting it upon her grave, he made one promise.
"I will do my best to watch over him, always."
