Autumn leaves were rustling as the wind blew through the abandoned alley, merely illuminated by thirteen jack-o’-lanterns that were flickering eerily in the darkness. It was a night of the new moon, and no stars were to be seen upon the sky… Perfect. Truly perfect. The manor, too, lay in the dark, as though it were to hide from the world and only those seeking to enter it were to truly find their way through the mist.
Rumour had it that the Malfoy lad was to propose to the youngest Black daughter at the stroke of midnight - quite about time, as their bond was anything but well-hidden and soon-to-become scandalous.
"Rumour…" Narcissa snarled, weaving her hair into an ornate braid with swift fingers. „Rumour, rumour, rumour…! I am sick and tired of rumours! I need answers! I need… him!“
"Patience, Cissy," said her mother at the other end of the room, surrounded by four levitating masks, each more beautiful than the other. The ball wasn’t going to commence until much later, but Black women did like to be prepared. "Perfect proposals take time."
Narcissa, who barely recognised her own temper, sighed deeply. "I couldn’t care less about how he proposes…" she murmured.
Mother smiled "It will be all right, dear. I promise. Say a special prayer tonight and it will be the most memorable All Hallows’ Eve of all. But come on now, Father is waiting."
They both wrapped themselves in heavy woollen cloaks, gathering the final ingredients for their rituals in the forest. Perhaps Mother was right… Perhaps, it would be all right, perhaps by midnight, she would be betrothed to the man she loved with her entire heart, her entire soul… Perhaps, this would be the most memorable All Hallows’ Eve of all, indeed.
