I hadn’t expected to see him that Halloween. Not after he’d been gone for so many years. But after his wounds were cleaned it was time to administer the potions.
He’d aged better than expected for one who had reportedly lost himself among the vagrants and lost souls of London. His friends who had cared had gone their own ways. And by some horrible twist of fate, he had gone from being one of the most well-known heroes of his age to all but forgotten.
That story was all-too familiar to me.
Looking at him sitting on the edge of that bed, fumbling for glasses that weren’t there, my heart stirred in the same way it had done that one year after the war. Only this time, he was in the hospital, and I was offering comfort.
“Hello, Harry,” I whispered.
It took him a few moments to recognize my hoarse voice, “Severus?” I approached and placed my hand on his.
Tears washed the dark shadows from his eyes. “I don’t know who I am anymore.”
I sat next to him and wrapped my arm around him, gently pulling his head onto my shoulder. “That’s okay. I still do.”
