Funeral practices

Dec 30, 2013 02:38

Sorry for the gloomy subject, but I couldn't find a post on this particular topic in the past entries.

I am specifically writing about Fred Weasley's funeral, and the funeral practices I've read about in british books and/or seen in movies don't coincide much with the practices where I am from, so I think I'll need a little help to get it right.

Are funerals always at churches? Are there wakes at funeral homes, or are they observed before a service in a church? (Is there always a service? What if you are not religious?) Is it usual for people to come over afterwards for a formal gathering with catered food (I've seen that in movies)? Does the casket have to be carried by four people?

Anyway, if you could just walk me through a muggle funeral, I'll be grateful, and if you have any thoughts about what the Weasleys might do, I'm sure it'll be useful.
