mid nineties: bathtubs, showers, bathroom styles, and kitchen furniture, appliances, and styles

I'm writing a scene set in a mid-nineties neighborhood similar to the ones the Dursley's lived in ( Read more... )

There's likely to be a shower over the bath, which is likely to be fitted rather than a free-standing claw-footed tub ( ... )

Stand mixers have been around for years and years, though. I still have my mothers Kenwood Chef, which is a glory of 1970s "harvest gold and brown". It's cast metal and weighs a ton.

In the 1970s I looked at the stand mixers at the Ideal Home Exhibition sitting around waiting to be washed, shuddered and got a Bamix, which is washed by giving it a whir in a mug of water. It was reconditioned (actually upgraded - they sent us back a new model) in the 1980s and it's still going strong.

I love mine, but it's a heavy brute and cleaning it can be a pain.

My mother still has her Kenwood Chef which is probably from around the same era, though it's white plastic rather than metal.

I like it so much I've been looking at modern Kenwood Chefs on Amazon - which seem to have not changed all that much over the decades. I'll probably get myself one at some point.

I wouldn't be without mine. Mum's was their top of the range one, I think, and it's in perfect condition. I hate the colour, but I have a handy cover for it when it's not being used, so I don't have to look at it much.

If anything happened to it I'd get another. Although I'll admit to being seduced by how pretty KitchenAids are!

I've had my Kenwood Chef since 1979; it's made bread at least once a week and umpteen cakes, and (apart from a new gearbox after a disastrous period of making my own peanut butter) has never had a problem. White metal with a white plastic bowl.

They would also have had a microwave oven.

Stand mixers have been around for years - they were rendered obsolete by the food processor!

I hadn't realised they were common in the UK, I guess I'm the magimix generation!

Your food processors must be very different from the ones I know. I wouldn't use mine to mix cookie dough or cake batter, and while some people think they can use them to knead bread, I don't think they're well suited, and I'd still rather use a mixer for whipping cream or egg whites.

Food processors are for chopping and shredding and rendering things into crumbs. Mixers... mix. How do yours do the same thing?

They have different attachments for different things; mine also has a juicer attachment as well as a citrus juicer and a blender.
