Harry is starting to miss duplicates.
Killing Voldemort was his goal for so long that he forgot to think about what came after, and the coming after is coming in papers - in triplicate and quadruplicate; piles of four, six, eight; scads, mountains, and avalanches. He is currently living in an office at the Ministry of Magic and signing accounts, testimonies, and a thousand other official documents, and refuses to touch the fanmail.
He still has nightmares about Voldemort. Only now, Voldemort isn’t threatening him with a wand and the deaths of his friends; Voldemort is shoving seventeen copies of a Ministry form at him while his friends shriek helplessly, drowning in a river of ink.
Finally, he snaps, leaving the peculiar anticlimactic limbo he’s been existing in, heading up the stairs, and onto the roof. The air feels good after so many hours in the same cramped room. He stretches and sighs before he realises Ron is standing there as well.
“Hey,” Harry calls softly.
“Hey,” Ron replies.
They stand together in silence, looking out.
“You know,” Ron says at last. “I thought it’d be...”
“That makes two of us,” Harry says, quietly. They watch the setting sun in silence.
