Author's Notes: This story brought to you by too much Chekhov, way too much post-apocalyptic SF, and a good helping of melodramatic high fantasy. (Also, first post hooray!) My own personal take on a seriously overdone theme.
Harry, Ron, and Hermione stand before the castle, Fawkes perched on Harry’s shoulder. It’s the end of the world, and he only has two barely-grown friends and a bird to help.
“This is it,” he says. Ron is white beneath his freckles as he nods resolutely. He holds Gryffindor’s sword, and the blade is stained with blood.
“The last hurrah,” Hermione adds. She is clutching her wand in one hand and a thick book in the other.
Harry looks from one to the other, and smiles. All I ever needed, he thinks, and they enter Hogwarts for the last time.
