“Alright,” Harry said, striding up and down before the D.A. as he thought aloud, “I learned something important last year…about playing to your strengths. When you’re up against something insurmountable…best to think of what you’re good at, and start from there. So! What are our strengths?”

He faced them expectantly.

Neville timidly raised his hand. “Herbology?”

“Good!” Harry encouraged, “Come on! Someone else!”

“I’m really good with switching spells!” Parvati offered, confidently.

“Arithmancy,” Hermione beamed in spite of herself.

“And everything else,” Ron muttered quietly.

“I see dead people,” Luna said serenely.

They all turned slowly to look at her.

“Up!”

“What do we say?” Ron asked patiently, his voice quiet from across the yard.

“Now!” squeaked the impatient angel, frizzy red hair giving her a bizarre, Raphaelian halo.

Ron laughed throatily, and, with an ease that made Hermione gasp, swung their daughter skywards, her squeal of delight flashing like sunlight on water.

“It’s amazing,” Harry admitted, stirring his tea, “He’s a new man.”

“You know,” Hermione said, “He used to ask me, ‘Hermione, why am I so worthless? All my brothers are so talented. What makes me special?’”

Harry shook his head, as they watched Ron weave his magic.

“Don’t tell me he’s sorry!” he’d screamed, tears and snot dripping down his front, “Mother, don’t you understand? He’s never going to stop!”

His feet pounded the earth as he fled, Potter on his heels, even now, the memories still swimming…

He found her, dangling, head at a strange angle.

“You were right,” the note read, “It was never going to change.”

Dumbledore’s gentle face lit green…

Lily.

From an early age, Severus had always had the talent for destroying the people he loved.
