Title: Ordinary
Characters: James, Peter
Rating: G
Challenge: What's In A Name
House: Hufflepuff
Word Count: 100

After living with boys named Remus and Sirius, James and Peter rejoiced in the fact that their own names were so ordinary.

They never knew that even ordinary names have meanings.

Consequently, they saw no irony in James--”the supplanter”--becoming Sirius's brother in all but blood, taking the place of Regulus in Sirius's heart, or of Peter--”rock”--being the strong, reliable one, the foundation of James' and Lily's hopes of safety.

It never occurred to anyone, later on, that the supplanter had died in the place of his wife and baby son.

Or that even rocks can crumble.

Title: Son of Loki
Characters: Fenrir Greyback
Rating: PG
Challenge: What's In A Name
House: Hufflepuff
Word Count: 100

Few people knew that Fenrir Greyback was originally a Muggle surnamed Grey.

He had been a quiet man who kept himself to himself and concealed his twisted taste for small children behind seeming normalcy-until the night he was bitten.

He laughed without stopping when the Healers told him what they clearly regarded as tragic news: that he was no longer human.

Gleefully, he cast aside his old name and adopted the name of Fenrir.

Fenrir, the powerful grey wolf destined to kill Odin at Ragnarok.

Truly, who would NOT trade his humanity for the power to destroy another's world?

Title: A Perfect Gentle Knight
Characters: Percy Weasley
Rating: G
Challenge: What's In A Name
House: Hufflepuff
Word Count: 100

Sir Percival, in Arthurian legend, found the ancient Roman spear that stabbed Jesus in the side while He hung on the cross. The spear was a deadly weapon, inflicting deep and bloody wounds that could not be healed by mortal skill.

Percy Weasley would not care that he was named for a Knight of the Round Table. And he would be insulted that Sir Percival was, in the ancient tales, remarkably gullible, even naïve.

Most assuredly, he would not wish to consider that cruel words and overweening pride had wounded himself and his family as sorely as Percival's terrible spear.

Title: Flower Language
Characters: Petunia Dursley
Rating: G
Challenge: What's In A Name
House: Hufflepuff
Word Count: 100

Petunia hated her name.

Her mother's name-Violet-was nice. Lily's name was pretty, even though red hair and green eyes didn't seem very lilylike to her sister.

But Petunia?

Who named a child that? she wondered. Who named their little girl after a cartoon pig's girlfriend?

When she complained about how awful her name was, her parents stared at her, astonished. Petunia fell silent. But her rage continued to simmer.

She found out, years later, that her parents got her name right after all.

In flower language, a petunia represents anger.
