“What do you mean, he is gone?” Bellatrix whirled around to stare at her husband, late returning from the Potters.
Rodolphus just shook his head slowly, “He is gone, Bella. He went in but he never came out. Not even when the house fell.”
“You lie!” In a rage, Bellatrix slapped his face, curling her fingers to rake his skin, drawing blood, “He is not gone, He cannot possibly be.” Meeting Rodolphus’ eyes, she shuddered at the terrible compassion she saw on his face. “No.” She whispered, her shoulder slumping in defeat, her fire extinguishing without air to feed it.
Title: Cruelty
House: Gryffindor

Notes: Grr. The Muse isn’t speaking to me now.
Cruelty takes many forms. A sandwich given to a starving child only prolongs death, a slower burn. Senseless violence, a man dies, a flame extinguished. A hand extended in aid turns into the branding hand of the master.
Bellatrix knows all these forms. Some she did, some done to her.
Some forgiven, none forgotten. Her skin burned in remembrance.
Incarcerated, she wrapped herself in a mantle of cruelty, befriending the enemy.
Long forgotten pain renewed, the Dark Mark burned, and Bellatrix smiled. The world had never seen this form of cruelty; hope turning to ash in a firestorm of rebirth.
