Over Mrs. Black's screaming, Rabastan smiled coldly at her husband.
Upstairs, drenched in cold sweat, Sirius listened.
"He betrayed the Dark Lord. He was unworthy. He was no Death Eater. Now
Death has eaten him." He handed over the heavy silver ring with the Black
family crest. "He failed the Dark Lord." Rastaban's amusement and disgust
were audible in his voice.
Sirius smiled humorlessly. His mother was spared the truth. His father
knew, but Sirius knew he'd edit the recollection to keep Regulus a "hero" in
their minds. Regulus had betrayed Lord Voldemort. Finally, Sirius
respected his younger brother.
Finally.

Snow caught in his hair and in his eyelashes. He hardly noticed.
"Is this it forever? Every time we talk, it will only be shouting?"
His steps crunched even as the coldness penetrated the Impervious Charm on
his shoes, soaking his socks.
"I thought they'd like to meet the Minister...prestigious..."
He glanced up through glasses blurred with frost, and saw the families in
their homes, laughing happily. They were together. No one was screaming.
Not even the Muggles.
He sighed, telling himself it was the cold that was making him sniffle.
Not tears, surely.
"Happy Christmas, Percy, old man."
