Wishful Thinking / Blink of an Eye

My second contribution to this community (my first was a long time ago, during the Superstitions challenge).

Title: Wishful Thinking
House: Slytherin
Word Count: 100
Challenge: Changes
Characters/Pairings: Snape, Draco
Author's Notes: I have this lovely picture in my head on Draco and Snape on the lam together.

Draco Malfoy looked blearily around. His surroundings were drab and unfamiliar, and the last clear thing he remembered was Snape telling him to run.

He closed his eyes.

“It’s all been a nightmare,” he muttered into the night. “When I look, I will be at home with Mother, with Father back with us. Dumbledore will not be dead, I will not have failed, and Snape will not be a murderer.”

But the bitter laugh from his left was real enough, and when Draco looked, his Head of House’s face was contorted with despair.

“Things have changed, Draco,” Snape whispered, hopelessly.

“I failed him.”

“Yes, you did.”

“He’ll kill me. He said he’d kill me if I failed.”

“And he will.”

Draco dropped his head into his hands and moaned, but Snape grabbed his wrists and forced him to look.

“I will protect you,” he snarled fiercely. “They won’t have you. We’ll flee, go underground.”

Draco suddenly paled. “My mother…”

“Is already dead.” Snape looked away. Voldemort wouldn’t spare her.

Draco was silent for a very long time, but the change took only a moment. Draco the scared little boy died, and Draco the bitter young man rose in his place.
