Um... WTF? Haemochromatosis spam in my LJ??

How utterly bizarre!

In my post-ep comments about The Jerk I mentioned that I have the haemochromatosis gene, because that was the condition the episode dealt with. I simply mentioned it, but the following comment has just been added to my LJ, hereI haven't taken part in any haemochromatosis blog or discussion, btw: the gene thingy I've got would ( Read more... )

I think it might be some kind of a bot thing that searches the net for mentions of hemochromatosis and reacted to your post - maybe????

Did you have a good time at the convention?

Had a great time but I also got sucked into the Tochwood fandom!!! Michelleann had told me about it and it sounded good but I got to see 5 episodes at the convention. I went back to my friends after the first two RAVING about the show. They all decided to check it out the next day and see if I had lost my mind or not. They are all hooked as well. It's so friggin' awesome.

Wow that's...disturbing. I mean the thought that mentioning something in your blog can result in unsolicited information like that is enough to make one paranoid, espcially with all this Warriors of Innocence crap going on at the moment.

Have you done anything about this, like emailed them, asked them not to comment? I mean, it may well be best not to do anything and just ignore it. But sheesh, that's more than a little bit worrying.

Weird! I got a comment-spam last week, but it was just something generic...I forget what exactly, and I deleted it, but, you know, cheap Canadian pharmaceuticals or something like that.

No actually we are tying to get people with Haemochromatosis to join us in a research study into the effects of phlebotomies

All done by hand

Best wishes

Really? Then in that case why did you choose to write to me in terms which wrongly suggested that we'd been in contact before. You said:

Thanks for all your help so far with our Hemochromatosis blog.

However, I hadn't taken part in any haemochromatosis blog, or discussion of any sort.

Writing to people in terms that attempt to suggest there's been earlier contact is an old and very tired spammers' trick. It's the sort of thing that would put many people off immediately, me included. Is there a reason why you choose to write to me in those terms, rather than to write and ask me to join you in the research study that you've now mentioned?

Oh, and an apology for having spammed me like that might have been a courteous move too, btw, if you'd had any genuine interest in encouraging people to join in, and presenting your group as anything other than some sort of spamming group.

A fair point

However all our studies are of course anonymous so we do not know who has respondent. For this study we have been involved with a huge number of people who have either been contributed or read.

Thus we felt perhaps wrongly that it would be best for us to assume everyone had seen our inviations

All the best

I got erectile dysfunction spam on the epilogue to Teamwork. I was amused for twenty seconds and then deleted it and never heard from the bugger again.
