Title: Rook's Faith
Archive: V+V, Cannon
Summary: The Rook's past.
Chronology: During Uneven Playing Field
Warnings: A bit more... something... then usual

How does one describe the ways of the world to the innocent? How does one show the wonders and magics of our times without explaining the atrocities of the past and the horrors buried under the common beliefs of the masses? How does one take the child, naive and trusting, and reveal to him the truth of blood, pain, oppression and death that is unadulterated life? How does one teach respect and compassion in a merciless environment where each breath may be the last and every dawn sees the spilling of more blood? How does one show love to the living, when the living are dying and the dead are the fuel for the camp fires?

The world is burning down around me, and the light at the end of the darkness is the fire of my brothers funeral pyre, where he lays himself down to spare the rest of us. My Lord and Master, why this? Why now? Command me and let my sword drive these demons back to their hell.

When killing your brother means you live to see tomorrow, and sacrificing yourself is meaningless in the end because everyone will be joining you sooner or later. What words does one use to sooth away the waking nightmares that are the screams of the damned that couldn't get behind the wall fast enough, and the tortured groans of the gates slowly giving way under the pressure of thousands of bodies and the relentless hammering of the battering rams? Daylight only brings clear vision of the previous night’s endeavors, and dusk carries the sounds of a new assault. When the water turns rancid in the wells, the food stores run empty and the horses and dogs have all been slaughtered, where do the healthy turn to for their next meal but those who are not strong enough to stop them?

We are yours, your hands and hearts amongst the masses. We live to serve and yet you stay our hands at this crucial junction! Please! Let us bleed, let us die, if only to ensure your victory here. After all, it’s not as though we will not kneel before you again in your palace of ebony.

How does one protect the child born into war from becoming an instrument of it? How does one teach the ways of a greater good when all they can see, hear and feel is the darkness of Death's dawning? How can one keep an innocent's soul pure when the world is ending all around him and all that is evil is thriving in the hearts of men and beasts?

Do not fear for us my Lord. We are not like those who follow you out of fear and awe, we obey out of love. And for that reason there can never be a death or pain too great to be endured in your name. Do not seek to protect your children, for we were born for this purpose.

When all hope is lost, and there is neither night nor day to look forward to, when darkness and light are one and the race of man is on its final breath, when the truth of faith is laid bare for all to see, to whom shall the prayers be begged?

We will follow you to battle. We will follow you to hell. You need only light the way and guide us. Don’t worry about the flames; we’ll burn the world to ash so that nothing remains to harm you. That is our purpose after all Father.
