Slim pickings at the market today, Briony thought as she wandered out of the stalls on the Green and in the general direction of her house in the Club section. Not a surprise, really; it had been that way since the borders locked up. There'd been an initial panicked run on foodstuffs when the news had spread, and since then, they were limited to what could be produced on-Deck. And it was winter - not exactly the prime harvest season. She'd made it out with one canvas bag of vegetables: some carrots, some kale, some winter squash. She had dried mushrooms, too, and had put up tomatoes and beans and corn and that sort of thing in the fall when she'd done the annual adventure in canning. Potatoes, both white and sweet, were in the cellar. She could make winter vegetable soup, she supposed. Bake some bread to go with; she was pretty sure she still had plenty of butter. Or she could turn the butternut squash into a risotto. Except...she was running low on arborio rice, and that had to come from off-Deck.
Hmm. Maybe not so much, then, and she glanced off in the distance towards the outposts, and wondered if the Deck was going to be their entire world from now on. It was a sobering thought, but it kept her mind off other ones.
