[ota] On the Ninth day of Christmas....

Chicago had been grand; so much food, a lot of family time that surprisingly wasn't laced with cold expressions and frowns, shopping (he had to get a whole new suitcase to bring home the clothing Audrey and Aunt Debbie had simply insisted he needed), yet more food, and then the countless presents. However grand Chicago had been though, coming home ( Read more... )

"And how was the trip?"

Because of course Davin had been aware Hadyn was gone...and he's just as happy to see his nephew was able to return safely, considering the rumors flying around that no one has been able to leave.

"You look well," except for appearing tired, but then...Hadyn had been looking tired for more than just today, recently.

"It was good." Hadyn said with a bit of a smile. "Long, and slightly exhausting, but good."

He did, however, also hold out a box with a gift inside. He won't mention he got it on extreme sale, but it looked like a nice watch- and that was what counted.

"As do you," he said with a bit of a snort. "Happy Christmas Uncle." He was going to start a new trend in this family, he thought.

Davin smiles at the package, accepting it with a nod. "Thank you, Hadyn..."

But he'll wait for the actual holiday unless Hadyn insists he open it now. "I'm glad it was good. Elisha's family entertaining?"

He won't insist, though he isn't entirely used to Celebrating the holidays. Laureline had not particularly believed in them. As for Elisha's family...

"They were warm, and welcoming. If that's what you mean." He said, tipping his head a bit curiously. "Nothing like ours." Which was a bit of a plus.

Davin didn't actually twitch at that comment, Hadyn. Because it's the unfortunate truth.

But he might sigh a little. "Always good to see how the other side lives, I suppose."

"...Yeah," he said, raising a brow curiously. "You make it sound like they are an exhibit, or species in a zoo. They aren't that different- maybe more stable, and sane. But..."

Well, no one in Elisha's family worried about having to defend their lives in a challenge for rank and power, that was certain.

Davin frowns slightly at Hadyn, not really upset, but more a little taken aback. That hadn't been his intention with his comment, anyway.

"I meant because they're such a different family from us, Hadyn." Which he, himself, had just stated before that.

"You also asked if I found them entertaining," Hadyn pointed out with a shrug. "Not how they would fancy to be described, I imagine." He explained evenly.

That aside though, he tipped his head toward the theatre and turned to start walking in that vague direction. "I don't suppose you know why the Deck has shut us all in."

He really doesn't understand when everything they said to one another became something for the other to take offense at, but it certainly seemed to be the way their conversations went, lately. Too bad they could apparently no longer have the close relationship they once enjoyed, but Davin won't push the issue now since it only seemed to be the sort of thing that will have the conversation ending on an even more discordant note.

So he shrugs slightly, spreads his hands, "I suppose they wouldn't, at that."

And then they can push on to the next subject as Davin settles into step beside Hadyn. "Unfortunately, no, I don't. And no one else seems to, either. Was it more difficult coming back?"

It was, perhaps, part of the growing up process. Hadyn was growing up not just mentally, perhaps, but away as well- he certainly spent more time in the company of Elisha than his own family, and it was certain to show.

"Not particularly," he said, shrugging a little as he slipped his hands in his pockets. "I did watch a few people try, and it was as it they were just turned back about without being aware of it until they realized they'd come full circle." It was interesting- and maybe something he needed to worry over, but he couldn't imagine what worry would get him in the end. He didn't know how to fix it, after all.

"That's about what happened to me, when I tried to leave."

Tried, anyway, after he'd heard people weren't able to. Just to see for himself.

"I've never heard of anything like it happening before."

"I suppose there was never anything like this before." He said with a shrug.

It was a bit strange, but whatever.

"Nothing much for us to do, I guess."

"Not unless you learned magic while you were gone," Davin says, wry. "I suppose we could always keep our fingers crossed that it fixes itself."

But he's not holding his breath.

"It won't be a fix for me to figure out, I suspect." He said with a shrug. "Just have to hope for the best." Which around here was a slowly lowering standard.

"And distract ourselves- with the Feast of Fools apparently."

"You going to volunteer to be the Lord of Misrule?" He asks, with a wry smile.

"Me? No. I think I'll leave that to Avery's other willing victims." He said with a shrug. "I've got enough to worry about- outside of being creative and fun for everyone involved."
