[LOG -- OTA] History is Cool, Yo.

Apr 17, 2012 14:56

Adrien's had a Good Afternoon. Because, you see, when one gets to spend the afternoon reading up extensively on the history of Henry VIII, it can hardly be a bad afternoon. A large iced coffee in one hand, a stack of books on the coffee table? It doesn't get much better than that.

Now, though, he's scrawling things all over the whiteboard in his ( Read more... )

Why is she here? Repossessing library books, no doubt, or scouting for strays with her devil librarian eyes. Still, Adrien's established a nice rhythm, which is probably why she replies without thinking.

"Sounds like an Animaniacs song."

"Ah- but it's not! That'd be an awful song for children to hear, what are you thinking, darling?" He sets the marker down, giving her a smile as he stretches a little. "No, no, it's the sing-song way to remember Henry the Eighth's wives. You know, the Catherines, the Annes, that odd one named Jane?"

"You think Animaniacs was for children? Anyway, it was you pointing at the board that put it over the top: like Yakko and the geography song."

Jane had been Henry's favorite. It was rather sweet.

Guess who never watched TV when he was young? His only exposure to Animaniacs was learning the theme song on piano when he was young. He shrugs. "It's an interesting subject to read about, that's all. Don't you think?"

True, she had been the favorite, by most accounts. But that made for an incredibly uninteresting story, as far as Adrien was concerned.

"I think we're quite lucky we got Elizabeth as his successor," he says as he answers Adrien's rhetorical question. "Clearly she had the better head on her shoulders than her father. Good thing she didn't lose it."

He checks out the bored, impressed by the amount of effort that Adrien's put into this.

"So which wife was your favorite?"

Adrien shrugs, glancing at the other man. "He was a good king. Arguably a good man in some aspects. Just not a good lover or husband."

He loves this, honestly. With all his heart. Adrien grins and taps his chin with the marker. "You know, I can't quite say. The first, second, fourth, and fifth are just too interesting, in my opinion."

He nods thoughtful, but adds. "You've got to admit, creating a new religion and foisting it on your people because you're pissed that you can't have the wife of your choice when you want it is a bit extreme." He flashes a grin. "But points for creativity though."

He studies the bored again. "How did number 4 manage nab that divorce anyway?"

"It ended up having a huge impact on life in the Elizabethan era, though." He grins. "I'd be flattered if someone changed their own religion for me, let alone their country's."

Adrien uncaps the marker thoughtfully, tapping the circle that indicates Anne of Cleves' time as Henry's wife. "Poor girl. She could barely speak a word of English initially, did you know? But she was a smart girl. She just rolled with the punches and allowed Henry to accuse her of consummating her first marriage. And then ended up settling pretty comfortably after the divorce."

Cadogan was too obvious. And might become a double tag anyway. :| lowtohigh April 18 2012, 00:26:01 UTC
"It's a well-documented period of history," the littlest Ace shrugs. True, Lancelot had brought her here to see the Queen and pay her respects to the new King, but that didn't mean she wasn't going to be instantly entirely distracted by the archives--and by dabbling through history. "There's hardly any surprise to it."

"It's not only well-documented, it's interesting. Good stories all around." He smiles at her, setting down the marker. "Read much about it?"

... Please don't have read too much about it. You're only twelve.

"Of course." What, was she supposed to be sheltered from this? "It's imperative to understanding fully the leadership and accomplishments of England's Elizabeth I."

Duh, Adrien.

"... All the details?" Still. They're. Some of the stories are. Delicate.

...why. Why is this happening. He comes to say that he's going off for a few days, and he's met with this. Why can't he walk in on Adrien talking about normal things? Useful things? Things that aren't odd bits and pieces of British history?

"Reading about this era is enough to put anyone off marriage for a lifetime, love. He was almost 50 when he married his fifth wife, and she-- well, we don't know, properly, but we know for sure that she wasn't older than twenty. And then she was beheaded. Awful stuff." That earns a calm sigh. The odd things he suffers through for this friendship.

/The highlight still seems to be the beheading. Will this take long?/

"Yes, well, she committed adultery. Not really her fault-- well, I suppose she wasn't forced into adultery - it's a long story." He write a few words next to the fifth circle on the board, then sets the marker down, whirling around to properly greet him. "It can and has been put on pause. How are you, dear?"
