Orca Cake

Yep, it's Fudgie the Whale's more genteel cousin. T's birthday has arrived coincidentally with my first attempt at cake decorating. She loves the orcas, so an orca cake it would be. I made a dense brownie base and a lighter chocolate top in oval shapes. Both cakes have been smoothly wrapped in homemade marzipan to seal in moisture and provide a smooth, clean base for the fondant. I'm not sure whether I'll go with rolled or poured fondant, but I can't do any of that until I gets me some cream of tartar uppa heah. Oh yeah, and gobs of black food coloring.

Aside from baking, I've been tending to my little Bubbie. He began acting sick a few days ago, hiding, sporting a new bald spot between his shoulders. At his first vet visit, he had a temperature of 105F (normal should be 102F or thereabouts). He was hiding, not eating, and obviously uncomfortable. He got a shot of antibiotics and a bolus of fluid, then I took him home. He still seemed miserable and wasn't eating. So on the next vet visit, they showed me how to force-feed him and gave him another baytril shot. Then a bottle of clindamycin for me to pill him at home. Luckily, I've got pretty good experience with pilling cats. He's doing a lot better, temperature was down to 104.2F on the second visit, and he started acting more like himself again. That's my big bubbie! He's a trooper, and all of the vets/techs love him. He doesn't scratch or bite, just lies there and moans deeply or lets out impossibly meek meows when the thermometer has been up there long enough.
