Grimm Comics Review

Yesterday, I purchased my copy of the first issue of the Grimm comic book!  I also received the free copy of issue #0 - our "free comic book day" in this region was delayed a week because of the Derby.

Here are my thoughts:

The artwork - I thought they did an overall great job of capturing the characters' likenesses.  However, the thing that really BUGGED me was Nick's eyes.  David Giuntoli has such beautiful gray/blue eyes!  In the comic book they are colored brown.  Why?  I have no idea!  It seems silly that they would go to so much trouble trying to accurately draw these actors, yet they would miss a detail like that.  (Then again, maybe it's only fangirls like me who are looking at his eyes...)

The story - These issues addressed two key story lines that I wished they would expand upon during the show: The question of wesen marring outside their "kind" and just what the heck Nick's mom is up to.  (Her character really grew on me, and I'm kind of sad that this story arc isn't being portrayed on the show.)  I was hooked pretty quickly, and I can't wait to buy the next issue.

Nick's internal voice in the free issue seemed a little more...dark, I guess? than the Nick we're used to seeing on the show.  Then again, I think the writers were trying to set the scene for those who are new to the fandom, and Grimm certainly isn't a light-hearted show (although it has its moments).

I think that's what I missed most and really separated the comics from the episodes: the lack of character interaction that wasn't crucial to the plot.  You know, the moments where Monroe is griping about Nick barging in and stealing his coffee or the banter between Nick, Hank, and Wu at a crime scene.  With a limited number of pages to tell the story, they sort of had to jump right into the action.

I don't want to give the impression that I didn't like these comics.  On the contrary, I really loved them!  It was action packed and delved deeper into some areas that I've been wishing they'd cover on the TV show.  They left us with a big cliff-hanger for the end of Comic #1, and I can't believe I'll have to wait another month to get more of the story!

BIG SPOILER FOR END OF COMIC #1
The biggest problem I had was the way they drew the new "Grimm" they introduced at the end of the first comic.  She's looks waaaay too much like your traditional objectified comic book girl - more sexy that tough.  I do not believe any woman who anticipated combat would wear those stockings, and nothing anyone says will convince me otherwise.  Her outfit isn't exactly inconspicuous, either.  She'd definitely stand out wherever she went.  Again, not something anyone would wear if they were going to fight.
