It doesn't matter where I go. Since I'm not a foodie purist- though I will pine for real Taiwanese food (a lot)- I don't often insist on pure, honest to goodness Asian food. Being deprived for a long time of yummy things will make me settle for less than perfect Asian cuisine, whether it's the greasy Chinese takeout or the overpriced Japanese sushi place. Case in point: my away rotation months in Chicago, my future home, where I have to settle for such things- and manage to do so without putting up that huge a fight. (My issue with Chicago food is more that it is f-in expensive to eat in Chicago compared to Los Angeles.)
But oh, I am never that forgiving with Mexican food. I am very picky about my burritos, and even more, my tacos. Any place without a halfway decent taco can't make anything else right, in my book. Having experienced the wonder that is Southern Californian Mexican food, I believe there is nowhere else in the US that makes a taco up to par- save perhaps border Texas.
Which, I suppose, will explain why I've been craving a good taco ever since I returned from Europe. Granted, I was busy dousing myself with beer, bratwurst, eisbein in Germany and steak tartare, duck, and escargot in Paris (more on my Europe trip in another entry), but still, I was definitely craving a good carne asada the moment the plane touched the ground. This was no different than all the times I've returned from the East Coast, convinced that there is no good Mexican restaurant in Boston. Or even New Jersey. Or New York (but then again, I wasn't in New York that long and readers should probably know that I kind of have this disdain for New York.)
Which, again, is why, while I am excited about wishing Wendy a great lovely 26th day of birth this Thursday, I'm a bit bummed about not getting to participate in a late night run of this: Taco Night, with
SaveOurTacoTrucks.org. You should totally check it out, and sign the petition if you can. More news on it, here:

I heart taco trucks oh so much! They've been so great to me and my bottomless pit of a stomach, ever since I discovered them in late night college hungerfests.
And I can't end a post on tacos without mentioning one of my favorites: King Taco, my first, holding a special place in my heart!
