"Danny, I told you this might happen."
It's been a long day, the kind that sinks into your bones and throbs between your ears, and normally Danny would go home and take a hot shower and go to bed, but now he wants to put a fist through a wall and numb it with a few shots of whiskey.
"I was here to catch Hesse and solve my father's case," Steve continues. "Noshimuri and Wo Fat are behind bars. The Yakuza are no longer a threat to this island."
"That's true," says Danny. "There's really no other reason for you to waste your time--what? Protecting witnesses, catching serial killers--"
"That's not what I meant," says Steve, sounding tired already, like he's had this conversation in his head a million times. "But I'm not the only person who can do this job."
"You're not the only person who can do that job either."
Steve is quiet for a long moment before Danny sighs and rakes a hand over his hair. "When are you going to talk to the governor?"
Steve hesitates, and Danny lets out a mirthless chuckle. "She already knows. See, I guess I thought you were asking for my thoughts before you made any huge, life-changing decisions."
Steve looks at him with that face, like Danny just ran over his dog. "Danny, my whole life is the Navy. You know that. It's what I'm good at. It's where I belong."
There's a lot that Danny doesn't say to that. He doesn't say go fuck yourself. He doesn't say thanks for being a selfish, stubborn prick. He doesn't say I thought you belonged here in Hawaii, with me.
"You're right," says Danny, turning to leave Steve's office. "I guess I should have seen this coming."
