Obstruction of Justice

"I cannot believe we are doing this."

They're standing at the edge of a dock watching the local police scurry back and forth between the shore and the medical examiner's vehicle. Everyone is dressed for cold weather, but Danny is the only one who looks like the Michelin Man.

"Which part can't you believe?" says Steve, looking absurdly comfortable in a fleece coat and a pair of fur-lined boots.

"Well, for one, I can't believe you dragged us up here to identify a body that may or may not even be in there," Danny replies, gesturing widely at the frozen lake behind them, "based on a hunch that it may or may not belong to someone who may or may not be one of Hiro Noshimuri's associates."

"You don't like the cold," Steve observes.

"This isn't cold," says Danny. "This is what killed the dinosaurs."

"Doesn't it ever get cold in New Jersey?"

"New Jersey is known for its mild climate," says Danny. "It gets cold in the winter, which is when it is supposed to get cold. The water does not freeze year-round."

"So you don't like Hawaii because it's too hot, and you don't like Alaska because it's too cold?"

"A little moderation is all I am asking," says Danny.

"Excuse me, Commander," says one of the officers. "They found the body. They're getting ready to pull it out. Do you want to go in?"

"Yeah, I'll come suit up," says Steve.

Danny watches the officer leave then looks back at Steve. "You're suiting up? Seriously?"

"Don't worry, I've done this before."

"You've hauled Yazuka henchmen out of freezing Alaskan lakes in the middle of winter?"

Steve ignores him and follows the officer to the van to change clothes. When he returns, he's wearing a cold-weather drysuit, an ice hood, a belt with weights on it, and an inflatable vest. He's also carrying about fifty pounds of additional equipment. Danny remembers the last time Steve dove in after a body - squinting into the sun, with saltwater clinging to his eyelashes. Rivulets of water disappearing into the bottom half of his wetsuit, open at the waist to display sharp hipbones.

"I hate Alaska," says Danny.
