human d8
It was probably not a good thing, John reasoned, that Vriska's first 'human date' didn't actually make it past dinner, much less a movie, before they made it past first base; if she ever dated anyone after him, they were in for a surprise.

moirails
John thought he understood troll romance pretty well, until the day that Vriska completely lost her shit, and he found himself holding an armful of crying, screaming, raging alien girl, with no idea of what to say or do, but a desperate need to say or do something to help her - and suddenly, he realized that he hadn't understood a damn thing.

one up shh i'm totally interpreting this not the way you wanted me to
"Get it get it get it get it get it!" Vriska ordered, practically climbing over John's shoulders to try to commandeer the controller, and talking so loudly that she couldn't hear John trying to tell her that the mushroom in question wasn't an extra life, it was fucking poison.

bros before hos i like how dave isn't in this one
"I'm really, really sorry," John said (begged? it sounded more like begging to Rose), "I know I said we could have lunch today, but Dave called," and his eyes are so earnestly desperate that she can't do anything but sigh and wave a resigned hand, freeing him to go build up his bromance instead of his romance.

one up yes i am doing mario again dealwithit.gif
Dave was just beginning to think that John didn't realize how much he hated playing as Mario when his friend exclaimed, "Did you spit that 1UP over the edge? This is cooperative multiplayer, jerkass!"

truth or dare
In retrospect, while accepting a dare from Rose was always a bad idea (when you were Dave), kissing John wasn't the Lovecraftian wet nightmare he'd made it out to be in his head - John's mouth was soft and he tasted like peppermint, and even though their teeth ran into each other once, he didn't actually laugh, much to Dave's surprise.

Bro/Vriska: Owned, telling the family, Love at first..., cool irony

owned
Humans were pink, squishy, pathetic things, she sneered at him, and the next thing she knew, she was struggling to stem the flow of blood from the gaping wound in her stomach, and the stupidly tall and rugged blond human was standing ten feet away, out of her reach - and maybe even out of her league.

telling the family
Vriska assumed, apparently incorrectly, that her matespritship with a human would be a complicated matter when it came to his strange human family (that is, his brother) - which is why she was confused when one day, the two Strider boys locked eyes from behind their shades, then Dave said, "Cool," jerked his head in approval and slouched off, hands in his pockets.

love at first...
"Do you believe in love at first strife?" she finally asked him, one day when they were alone, and was honestly (and pleasantly) surprised when he didn't laugh - he took his shades off to look her in the eye (and her heart beat a little faster, the stupid thing) when he said yes.

cool irony"What?!" Vriska screeched at Dave's dubious ( ... )

truth or dare
Karkat thought he was safe from any fucking moronic licking dares when Nepeta was doing the daring, so he took the safe route and avoided truth (and any embarrassing quadrant questions she had for him), never suspecting that the mischievous feline might have been in cahoots with the mighty dragon all along.

that one time
After another close call (this time with Sollux; fucking Christ, if he ever found out about That One Time, Karkat would never hear the end of it), Karkat decided that it was time to prepare some kind of humiliating experience for Terezi, just to even the odds and give himself a That One Time to hold over her head - the only problem was that he didn't have the foggiest goddamn fuck of a clue how to embarrass a girl like her.

you're so stupidOnce her matesprit had finally finished his forty-minute tirade about propriety and romance and foreplay and the 'art of the moment,' Terezi lifted her head from her hands and let him see her sharkgrin, and all she said (all she needed to say to make him stop dead in ( ... )

time
The thing he liked best about being with her (strange and exotic and chaotic and painfully hopeless as it was) was that there was never any rush (everything so slow, so easy, so carefree until they had to loop back again to keep from running out of-): they had all the time in the universe between the two of them.

dreams
Dream bubbles, he found after a while, were no more confusing than time loops, if a little less concrete - and watching her navigate them, following her crimson pixie dust trail, holding her hand as they passed from one dream to the next wasn't a bad way to pass the time.

mortality
It was something they were both intimately familiar with, their own mortality; he'd seen more dead Daves than he cared to count, and she felt like she'd spent more of her life dead than alive (funny how time can play tricks on you), but unfortunately, it didn't make the promise of impending doom any less unnerving - so they averted their eyes.

tricks
As if it wasn't bad enough that the kid was so goddamn cheerful - when he opened his mouth and said, "Oh, hey, I know that one! You palm the card from the middle when you cut the deck, right?" Niou nearly punched him in his giant teeth.

cats
When one of the onlookers legitimately bet a pair of kittens that they couldn't do that trick twice, John sighed - because they could, and even if it meant John might burn his eyebrows off, they would.

dictionary
By all rights, he should have found it irritating that she demanded to know which word he was looking up each time he asked for the dictionary, but her thinly-veiled attempts to impress were, while completely precocious, honestly very charming - and she was as good as the dictionary was, anyway, and prettier to look at.

manners
She had no trouble with observing most of the customs - she spoke appropriately before and after eating, when she left and when she returned, and she took her shoes off when she entered the house - but she did find that the general reticence of Japanese boys when it came to dating was somewhat frustrating (which is how she wound up kissing him first, despite all of her resolve not to make the first move).
