Gate7 Chapter 2 - Thoughts and impressions
OK, so maybe I was a little harsh to judge the chapter before the translations come out. It wasn't that bad, but at the same time it wasn't that exciting.
Basic chapter overview: Chikahito makes breakfast, Sakura has scary tea cravings, Hana and Chikahito go out on an errand, meets creepy guy who turns out to be Hana ect's boss (of sorts), Chikahito, Hana+creepy guy get enveloped in to another dimension (for the third time in as many chapters), and a strange girl appears.
Tachibana's scary tea cravings at the start of the chapter was funny! 'Must....have tea...or I will kill.....' XD How many people thought 'Oh my god, that is totally me in the morning' ? XD It's surprising to learn he's a college student. He has such a normal life outside all of this stuff. And Sakura's job is as a geisha dresser? I keep forgetting that they are living in a Hanamachi (geisha district).
And Hana, Tachibana and Sakura's 'boss' appears in this chapter. I've heard some people call him handsome, but I just find him scary. He looks like a gangster. And in what way is he their 'boss'? Has it not been explained yet or am I just confused?
And seriously, 70% of the manga consists off them eating noodles. I've lost count of how many bowls of noodles they've got through in this manga already. At first it was funny, but now the noodle obsession is getting tedious.
And I've got a bit of a bone to pick with the characters too. Chikahito is really beginning to resemble Watanuki. It's not too bad a thing, it's just it will get boring if he is just exactly the same as him. And as for Hana, she really beginning to turn in to an Chi-esque overly cutsey, cloying love interest, and it's starting to really get on my nerves.
But, of course, the big question about this chapter is 'what is Chikahito's 'power''? Because it is outright stated that he has one in this chapter. And how is he 'like Hana'?
I know it's a bit early for theories, but here's mine; Hana is 'created being' - a magical tool in human form (think of Maru and Moro from XXXHolic) created by Tachibana and Sakura. And maybe, Chikahito himself, has also been created by someone for some purpose. Part of me is wondering if Gate 7 is something that will turn darker later on. Similar to how Tsubasa started of relatively lighthearted, but once it got in to it's main plot became much darker - I'm wondering if the same thing will happen here. Maybe after Chikahito's 'identity' is revealed? I wonder.
