This is probably completely off the mark, but...

[Theory regarding John in Sherlock S3 (Warning for slight set spoilers)]As most people will probably know, a couple of months ago photos began to circulate tumblr of Martin filming on set as John, rather somberly dressed (in a way that was noticeably reminiscent of Sherlock; with a scarf and long coat), and sporting a mustache. Everyone who has seen the photos have been debating as to their meaning, and the most popular opinion seems to be that this is John following aftermath of Sherlock's 'death'.

However, I've been wondering - and as I've already said, this is probably completely off the mark - what if this is John not from this period of time at all? What if this is John from maybe ten or 20 years in the future?

Retired John, returning to Baker Street, his and Sherlock's old home, to reflect on past times. Maybe following the death of Mary. Maybe after the actual death of Sherlock himself. I don't think that Moffat or Gatiss would kill Sherlock off at random since they don't like deferring from canon, but at the same time Sherlock's eventual death post-retirement is never actually shown in The Last Bow, so they could choose to eventually feature or allude to it in this adaptation. And I'm not sure I can really imagine this Sherlock settling down to keep bees either, tbh. Or Moffat or Gatiss writing such. And as events have happened over a much shorter time frame in this series, then it's likely that Sherlock's retirement would probably occur sooner as well.

But whatever the reasons, a 'flash-forward to the future' scenario is one that really intrigues me. I'd love to see this. A little glimpse in to the future. Even if it is melancholy.

To be fair, Martin doesn't look to old in these photos, but at the same time, it's hard to age actors without the use of make up - the effect of which often ends up looking fake - changing physical features such as haircuts/facial hair is one of the most commonly used techniques, combined with the clever use of lighting and camera angles.

And while I know this probably isn't true, it is a head-canon theory that I really like to toy with for the meanwhile. If other people know spoilers which disapprove this (which there probably are), then feel free to inform me or debate with me, just not in too much detail ^^; (I've not made a good job of avoiding spoilers so far, but major ones I do still try and steer clear of). Actually, any debate regarding the 'meaning' of these photos would be very interesting :).
