Bubba's Pampered Pedalers has designed a cross-country trip next spring, from San Diego to St. Augustine. It would be around 2600 miles and take 8 weeks or so. It sounds very interesting, as that is something I've thought about doing for years. This would be easy in the sense they do all the planning, haul your luggage, provide the tents and air mattresses (including setup), and serve breakfast and dinner each day. All you have to do is pedal your ass across the US.
The route essentially will parallel I-10 on lightly travelled roads where possible. It will go through
San Diego, CA; El Centro, CA; Yuma, AZ; Tucson, AZ; Tombstone, AZ; Columbus, NM; El Paso, TX; Del Rio, TX; north of Austin, TX; north of Houston, TX; Kinder, LA; north of Biloxi, MS; St. Francisville, LA; Mobile, AL; Pensacola, FL; Tallahassee, FL; Gainesville, FL; St. Augustine, FL
The main drawbacks: price ($$$$$) and being away from home that long. I could design my own trip for much less and probably do it faster. Not sure I'd want to do it self-contained, and arranging a sag could be a problem. The ideal would be a small group of friends to share motel and campsite expenses.
I wonder why they picked Austin instead of San Antonio, since they come back down to Houston. I believe I know someone in SA.
