Today I rode Charmer all over the place. He has always been an easy keeper and a little overweight, but last fall he was getting really very fat. We have has him on a diet all winter and it hasn't made a difference. In fact, he actually seems to have gotten heavier. So my next plan of action is exercise. I've made a new schedule for myself to fit in riding Charmer almost every day. And this summer we'll keep him in a less lush pasture, so that he doesn't get so much to eat. Today, I was going through old pictures and was amazed at how he looked when we first got him. He looked so much more fit those first 2-3 years. Charmer as a pasture ornament just doesn't work. He's got to be played with. He's also a very "in your pocket" kind of horse. Loves people. Anyway, he did really well out on the trails and the road. We walked, did a little bit of an amble or a foxtrot (I couldn't tell) up the driveway, and cantered up a hill, but for the most part just walked. We rode for a little more than an hour and he scarcely broke a sweat, so I'll push him a little harder next time. All in all, I'm happy to be playing with my old LBI again!
