Oh my gosh, I have found my new favourite movie
(500) Days Of Summer
Well, maybe it was to do with watching it in the lush State Theatre as part of the Sydney film festival. Every time I go there for something, it's always a magical experience. But I could already tell it was going to be a good one within the first 10 seconds, at the opening line:
Any resemblance to people living or dead is purely accidental.
Except you, Jenny Beckman.
Bitch.
The gorgeously boyish Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Tom, the romantic idealist who becomes infatuated with Summer, who doesn't believe in love. Along with celebrating the giddy exhiliration of the initial stages of the relationship (the fanfare scene is my favourite), the film also reveals how ugly it can get. I found myself amazed at how much of myself I saw in both characters, as polarised as they are in their views of love (I heavily leaned towards the jaded end). Summer was frustrating and irresponsible with her actions towards Tom but I could relate to her detachment. Tom's naivety quickly turns to cynicism as he realises love isn't exactly the glorified roses-and-butterflies myth that the media feeds.
The script was deliciously witty and poignant, I loved the non-linear storytelling too, it was 'friendlier' to follow than my other favourite film, Eternal Sunshine. And wow, I lapped up the surrealist touches like the 2D animated bird and the drawings of the city, and the more literal Magritte reference. And of course, the ridiculously awesome soundtrack! I was sitting there gushing every time a song came on, from the Smiths scene in the elevator to multiple Regina Spektor tracks to my beloved Feist. Even Aussie acts the Temper Trap and Wolfmother feature pretty significantly. Midway, I was dubious with how they would end the film but I thought it was a brilliant conclusion.
Haha, yet another film that Zooey Deschanel sings in. She's so darn cute.
9/10
