I wasn’t keen on going to the
Toy Convention(Toycon) at the SM Megamall. One, it’s in Megamall….not really a place that you see me rushing to. B.) I might spend. But then again, I want to see some friends there. And meet some new ones. So, I went.
Well, I had fun. there were bands, comic stalls, toy stalls and some films being shown. I felt like a kid again surrounded by toys. Only, I’m not a kid. I’m a hairy overweight cranky bitch with a tremulous wallet. I wanted to buy the bobble heads till I saw the price. I wanted to smack the salesman across the face.
So, I got myself the next best thing: a keychain plush toy of cookie monster. I definitely cannot afford these "dolls"....ok figurines:
Oh, and the comics…..glorious glorious comics. I hied my fat ass off to the independent comic makers’ table and saw some friends. I was smiling at the latest cache of works. One asked why I do not have any idie works nor a compilation. Although it would be great to have something printed, I’d rather put it out on the internet. It would mean financial suicide for me, but at least, I know for sure that my comix and strips would have readers from the vast wired world.
Or I could just be a lazy bitch......most likely that.
I bought some indie titles and marveled at the dexterity of Alfredo Alcala’s lines as a comics illustrator. He was cited for his contribution to the Filipino “komiks” world at the toy convention. His works were being exhibited. The illustrations and panels of Alcala’s pen and ink etchings show a different world of komiks.
The detailed lines, the swirls of the ink brush are so Jurassic in this day and age of clean manga-inspired art works and the saavy renderings of computer softwares. It was looking at a time capsule occasionally ignored by the younger set in their meticulous (often ridiculous) costumes for the Japanese-derivative hobby of cosplay (Costume play).
Apparently, the Filipino urban youth gets a kick out of dressing up like their favorite manga or anime characters. It would be great if this sort of fanfare would be translated into creation of a new Filipino komiks mythology or at least understand and learn from the dynamic history of Filipino komiks and cartooning.
But then again, a cute girl in a skimpy school girl outfit just snags more eager eyes than a historical lesson.
Hmmmm.....perhaps, I'm just bitter that I can't muster enough guts to come in and join the cosplay as Super Mario. All I have to do is look for some vermillion overalls and a wig of curly hair. Or I could go as the obese Donkey Kong. Whatev.
Then I saw a graphic novel that I have been searching for…for years! It was on sale….20% off. I squealed and told….not asked….told my friend to lend me half of the cash. I bought
David Lapham’s
Stray Bullets Volume 1: Innocence of Nihilism. I read a chapter of “Victimology” years ago. It’s about a little girl witnessing a murder and how she is isolated from her family and from her classmates.
It’s just the thing I look for in a comix.
So, I spent….again.
But I got a series of great shots with my mobile phone. I captured a geek zeitgeist and I was reveling on it. This is how I deal with being a resident in cubicled purgatory….I am in constant search for shallow guilty pleasures.
There was an exhibit wherein participants submitted by participants. I saw some really great stuff. But I was stopped dead in my track when I saw this:
I was flabbergasted. It was an entry from this girl and I thought it was endearing.
Here's her write-up:
Mariposa (Butterfly)....It can summon all kinds and species of insects. Power of flight. Golden poisonous dust comes out of her wings which causes temporary blindness of her enemies. Her wings disappears and reappears at will.
Notice she used the pronoun "It" to describe the character and not "she." hmmm
Well, I thought it was endearing AND a perfect costume for the upcoming Gay Pride parties in Malate and Makati.
This kind of reminds me of a costume worn by Melanie Marquez in one of those super campy superheroine flicks produced by Regal Films in the 1980s. She was in this green tights with big hair and glitters all over and she was fluttering with flimsy butterfly wings.
Well, I walked around the crowded halls and I spotted some noteworthy stuff. I was etremly pleased to see some old friends like
Joanah Tinio. I call her the Queen of the indies.
Joanah provided Gay moment #2:
She has released more than a dozen independent comic issues already. It is a feat to sustain this activity seen as frivolous and impractical by the sick cruel world.
But at the indie table, it was all smiles and appreciation for the comics that dominated. I was told that a local showbiz "love team" went to the Toycon. They even stopped by the indie comix table. Boy, am I glad I wasn't there to witness a swelling of crowds gawking at atrophied smiles of showbiz personalities.
However, I am happy to note that they bought some indie titles. I was told that there is this androgynous goth comix maker who sold his comics by striking fear in the actress's heart.
Hahahahah. I was just happy to have purchased and met some friends. Showbiz couples, be damned.
Here's Joanah with her compilation of her series of Cresci Prophecies.
She's a very detailed illustrator. Her works are elegant and sweeping. Her stories are reminscent of Western epics and folklore splattered with Filipino nuances.
I bought some indie titles, too. I just sighed at the vicarious happiness I get from the fan boys and girls. My friend who joined me said, "So, this is your world." I smiled, "This is not exactly my world but one of my galaxies in my universe."
Of course, I posed with some girls in costume. I came up to them and asked for a photo.
This girl is supposed to be the Marvel mutant Storm. And being the X-Men fan that I am....posed with this statuesque beauty.
Damn. I wanted her boots. I wanted to slap her silly and steal her footwear and her wig and leave her like a crumpled up rag on the floor. I can't stand it when other people are seemingly more fabulous than me. hehehe.
But it was Superman who had me at hello.
Can't wait for June 28!!!
It was a great time to geek out and the Toycon delivered.
God loves geeks y'all.
