Never stop singing

Such was the advice my wise baby brother gave me recently when I was feeling depressed, a motto he shares with his brothers.  It was meant metaphorically, of course, but the literal version is quite therapeutic as well.  I've just spent the past... what felt like fifteen minutes but was probably two or three times that... singing in the shower.  Singing an insane mash-up of French ballads and reggae (with "Tir Na Noir" and the opening theme from Carried by the Wind as an equally bizarre opening act) in the shower, at the top of my voice.

I like singing reggae because I get to use my  full vocal range--and it's just fun, and inexplicably healing.  Reggae, for me, is truth in music.  It's everything it means to be human: it's about despair, it's about happiness and hope; it's about oppression, it's about defiance, it's about freedom; it's about loneliness and being forgotten, it's about unity and brotherhood; it's about frustration, it's about peace.  It explores and celebrates the endless cycle of being down and standing up again that is the human experience.  The lyrics are simple and direct, the beat is always something that you feel down to the core of you.  It makes you want to move and hold your head up and be alive.  And not just the upbeat stuff, either.  Even if you're feeling like shit and do nothing but put "Melancholy Mood" on repeat, by the end of the first time around you don't feel like crying anymore because the emotion's coming out of you in a purer form, in the music.  More than that, when you sing sadness in reggae, you get to stay whole through the sadness--you're in pain, but you're never broken.  When I want to lose myself in any pain or sadness I feel, I go running for my blues and old country... but when I want to get better, I go get me some reggae.  Because reggae makes everything better.

And now that I have bored you with my rhapsodizing about the Marley dynasty et al.--and whilst I am thinking happy thoughts--allow me to share one in particular with you: new meme!  (If you still feel like tagging this after all that XD) Because we joke about me=Eight, and the sudden random thought of a certain Time Lord singing when he thinks nobody can hear made me lol.
