I always think of this dinner scene as a precursor of the married couple that would some day be a reality. No matter how much in love or how close they may be, there is something that is a common occurrence in a normal home, be it the home of a peasant or the home of a king. Hubby and wife are going to occasionally bicker over something relatively minor, like socks on the floor or the toilet paper roll.
Now here we have these two people who not only aren't married, even the thought that they ever could be would be under normal circumstances as farfetched as as a blue jay getting together with a chickadee. But here they are, as fate would have it, under the same roof, and that under some pretty farfetched circumstances. We already know they've been dealing with some undercurrents for some time now, but who would have thought they'd end up having dinner together and of all things, end up quarreling. Now how married is that?!
Ah, but as little arguments often do, the disagreement leads them to a "moment." Their first real one. Where he actually ends up touching her. You know what I mean, right? He touched her. First, with his eyes. Just look at his eyes when she's explaining why it did matter where the meal came from. Look at them. So many feelings are in those eyes. As I said, it's like he's touching her. And then, with his voice. Just that one word as she turned away. "Guinevere." It's been said before and I'll say it again, no one else says anyone's name like this Arthur says her name. Indeed, it's a touch, even a caress. "Guinevere." But in this instance it's accompanied by the ultimate touch: This man, who we've seen successfully overpowering several of the toughest fighters with his sword in hand, is using that same hand to turn her around with so gentle and light a touch that I just can't imagine the woman could help but have all kinds of chills running up her spine. No wonder she was speechless. And then, he topped it all off with those tender words, such a change for him...
So they were coming out with some feelings here, and then darling Merlin interrupts. Well, to be picked up again in the morning....
So our little domestic scene, bickering and all, between the blue jay and the chickadee led to a pretty powerful touching moment, in more ways than one.
