Not to incur the wrath of people suffering in the heat, but I think this air conditioning thing really isn't for me ( Read more... )

Hmm. Thanks. I wonder if there's a setting that lets you adjust just how cold that same temperature it blows needs to be...? Right now it's freakin' arctic.

Basically, I just don't really enjoy being home in the summer with the windows closed. Even when it's hot I prefer the fresh air, the smells, the sounds. The smells are mostly trees and flowers, and the sounds are mostly birds and a few kids, so it's kinda nice. I only tried it this week because the sun pours in during the day and there's been no breeze to cool things down in the evening.

Most of the vents are in the floor so it makes the floors cold to walk on, etc. The noise itself is relatively quiet, the same as it was all winter with the heating. It took me a while to get used to it but I was never able to sleep with it running the fan continuously through the night. It's probably quieter turning on and off than hearing the neighbouring air conditioner motors/fans going on and off all night.

But, bottom line, I don't sleep well in the cold. The warmer it is, the deeper I sleep. Cool temperatures mean I get, at best, a light sleep.

So far my plan is to leave it on minimally during the day to prevent the heat from building and then open the windows for the evening. Depending on the night-time temperature or the noise level from outside, I will probably just go back to sleeping with the windows open.

Right now the thermostat (which is upstairs) is set for about 28. I can't imagine it's accurate but it's good for the upstairs even if it's already too cold downstairs with the air conditioning on at all.
