Fun Food Fact of the Week: There is a difference between oils.

Did I know this? Of course not. But when perfecting making chicken salad again, using thinner slices of boneless chicken strips and cutting them before grilling them, I also tried my hand at salad dressing from scratch. Italian salad dressing, to be precise, and not technically from scratch -- using a mixture, and then adding three types of liquids, my mom made this dressing when I was younger and it was what got me hooked on salads to begin with. It's so good, really. And it's really simple to create, which is why I wasn't too worried about making it myself.

Using a nifty container, you don't even have to worry about exact measuring, because the cruet shows it for you! So, honestly, there was no reason for me to mess this up.

So, naturally, I messed up.

The three liquids you add to the mixture are vinegar, water, and oil. Yes, just oil. They don't tell you what kind of oil and, before this attempt, I wasn't aware that there was more than one type of oil (ignoring the kind you put in motor vehicles, but don't change the subject). So when I put all the ingredients together, I added the mixture, the vinegar, the water, and olive oil.

Bad.

What I should've put in is vegetable oil. I was not aware of this, mainly because the directions didn't specify and, again, I knew nothing about the difference between oils. I learned quite quickly, however, because the dressing with olive oil was naaaaaaaasty. It made the whole salad taste like crap. I was so depressed, I thought I had done something wrong.

But it was the damn oils.

Lesson learned, Italian salad dressing. Lesson learned.
