That's where the social contract thing ought to come in. Wouldn't it be great if anyone could name anyone else as their legal partner-in-finances? A single woman could name her disabled sister as her beneficiary and the sister could get insurance and stuff like a spouse; two gay guys could do it; two long-standing roommates could do it. That would take all the religion out of the government's part of it!

For real! Government has no place in the business of morality! I'm sure any politician would agree. Government should only be there to keep one person from intruding upon another. IOW, "Your right to swing your fist ends where that guy's nose starts."
Part of the government regulating marriages is the whole spouse benefit thing and filing tax forms as a household.
