You know... perusing Bridal Mask too much do take a toll... As always, I tend to overthink.
Like... how much Gangsan and Gangto really have their father's blood in them. Not just the patriotism... but the ability as a 'spy'. Aka skills in espionage. Well, the drama didn't show much of Lee Seon but it was pointed out that he's the chief of the Secret Service. And that should relate to espionage stuff... right?
Like I mean, even if Gangsan started out pretending to be crazy to get out from imprisonment... him later keeping the ruse while living a double life as Bridal Mask did require some skills. I mean... not like he had training in pretending to be crazy or to be able to live a double life... and getting abused by the other Joseon people who hated Gangto for working with the Japanese, must be hard.
Same with Gangto since... even if he didn't join the Imperial Police to become a spy, it must have been hard for Gangto to survive by himself during those years he was inside the force. (Getting in had been hard after all. Wonder what else Ganto had to endure ever since.) Considering, since the only Japanese officers that treated him well had been... Konno and Abe. Shunji don't count since he's just a teacher back then and had no involvement in the force. I mean, it must have clashed with his own values to be working against Joseon people, (tho i don't think Gangto did more than just his work in chasing down 'criminals' and keeping order during official stuff) yet he manage to do it despite that. Since it's what his job required. That required a strong will... because he does face hatred from his own countrymen. And to turn around being the second Gaksital and receiving even more hardships, that can't be an easy feat.
People with weaker will would have break sometime or the other. Like Tasha and Noh. (Or Leader Jo on the earlier arc). Despite they also tried to contribute to the resistance, they're not really that unbreakable when facing their opponents directly. Like when they were caught and threatened with torture to find out Yangbaek, Dongjin and Gangto team's location/info.
Compare to that, the fact that both (Gangto and Gangsan) were not that easy to break under pressure showed how much they're their father's son. (also the fact that they could really lie without being obvious). Gangsan aside, the fact that Gangto was really quick thinking and smart despite not having high education, really was amazing. Since despite the lack of education, he really good at strategizing. Then again, that's probably because Konno was training him. Perhaps. Konno caring about Gangto more than his own son should imply something like that regarding their relationship. Right-hand person after all.
Both Gangsan and Gangto's situation were quite situational; Gangsan pretending to be crazy and Ganto joining the police to support his family. Yet that turned into an advantage for them. As in Gangsan was able to fight for freedom (and Joseon people) much more freely without endangering his family (while indirectly gets police intels thru Gangto's connection), and Gangto (after taking over as Gaksital) able to continue the job while having a direct line to the inside workings of the police administration! (And becoming secret agents just like their father.) Oh! Also the fact that both of them are also good with martial arts. Like Gangsan can also use a sword; and Gangto having learned kendo from Shunji, as well as know how to fight using throwing knives, spears, staff.
That's just awesome really. How these coincidental things aided Gangsan and Gangto during their period of becoming Gaksital.
