After four days of inservices and one day with Actual Live Students, I'm about ready to drop. Good news: the students seem like they might actually be human (amazing considering they're 7th, 8th, and 9th graders), and I like my colleagues. Bad news: I believe this job will eat my brain, leaving nothing to spare for fanfic. Just be warned ( Read more... )

Congrats on making it through the week! Middle school can be challenging or so I heard. I worked in a highschool for three years and I loved it completely and also found it completely exhausting!

Sharing the LotR love also. I'm a big Tolkien fan, including reading some of Christopher's works, leslie's book, and Tolkien's letters, and Shippey. Even with that, I enjoyed the movies very very much. For some reason with Jackson's work I'm able to see the story as if it were a legend, one with variations depending on the bard you're listening too, if that makes any sense. Myth's, legends, fairytales, folktales... these all vary across time and culture, and the movies felt the same way to me.

They are also one of the few pieces of fantasy, along with BTVS and harry Potter that I share with my son Ben, who's fifteen now. And so for that alone, I think they're wonderful.

Good luck with the job BTW!

That's a great way to think of it. honorh August 31 2003, 09:56:38 UTC
Tolkien himself was wanting to recreate the bardic tales with LotR, so I can't see him objecting. Things have to change when you translate them to film--they have to. I think Peter Jackson has been very wise in the changes he's made.
