You are right that some don't fill out the birth certificate and do it later. However our rabbi and most people I know do the birth certificate stuff within the hospital deadline (not sure if every hospital is 48 hours - my other two were at home and my midwives let me wait as long as I wanted). A name on a birth certificate is meaningless in Judaism. The real name is the one given at the bris. If they so happen to be the same that is fine, but it isn't like it is written in Hebrew or a Jewish legal document. They still don't call him by name or tell anyone and only the nurse taking the papers doing administrative stuff I guess can read it. It doesn't get put on his little nursery bed card.
I guess I am nervous to call the school and be like what do you require on your medical forms and how do I get an exemption. I'm still waiting to learn if he'll get the teacher I want and then if he still qualifies for speech I want to pick the therapist with her.
